Zach Brunner is a master at single image storytelling. His illustrations are sexy and charming, often with more than a hint of true grit, and they instantly pull you into a surreality that rests delicately on the border between the banal and the fantastic. His work is clearly grounded in the true New York City queer experience, and focuses on finding sexuality in unusual places (ie. pokemon drag cosplay) and sensuality in the most commonplace human experiences (ie. quarantine date night). That’s why we felt, as COVID draws to a close, he would be the perfect artist to help us celebrate the most unsung heroes of the pandemic era- especially in NYC: our food delivery people.

[dandy:] Tell us what your art is all about.
[Brunner:] I make geeky pop-culture art through a queer lens. I want my work to be as aggressively gay as possible.

I do love that about your work. So then, how would you describe your style?
My style is bright, colorful, sarcastic, sexy, and fun.  I try to bring a lightness and fun to my subjects while also attempting to break down the gender binary using fashion, color, and poses.

What would you say are your queer credentials?
I went to art school in Manhattan so I have a BFA in general faggotry. I don’t know, I’ve always been weird. I just try to stick to what feels right to me and fuck everyone else’s opinions.

Art school in New York definitely ups the ante. Where are you from originally?
I grew up in Westchester NY, right above New York City.  It’s quite a straight area so I wasn’t exposed to queer culture until I moved to the city for college.  It wasn’t until after I graduated that I came out, and wasn’t until after I came out that I started making queer artwork.

What's your favorite subject to make art of?
Butts and balls.

Nice. What else tends to bring you joy in life?
Pizza, Spending time with both my queer family and my biological family, JRR Tolkien, creating art, The “Coffee Thing” at Rocka Rolla bar in Brooklyn. If you know, you know.

I used to live like a block from there! Amazing. So, what are you not a big fan of?
I'm not into large crowds of people, outdoors, capitalism- toxic humans who refuse to go to therapy and take responsibility for their mental health. The smell of nature.

Can you tell us a little more about the delivery person you created for the dandy collection?
The guy in my piece is your typical sexy, kindhearted, lovable himbo. He makes some extra cash delivering pizza and happiness on the weekends. He loves life, croptops, biking around town, and thongs.

If you had a personal crayon color, what would you call it?
Oooh that’s hard, it would probably be like ”Ooze from the Devils Anus Black.”

Who are the artists you admire the most?
I grew up learning how to draw by studying Joe Madureira’s comic work.  I constantly turn to Sergio Toppi, Tomer Hanuka and Mike Mignola for inspiration. They are all master artists.

What would be the most ideal place to see your work displayed?
I would love to see my art hanging above urinals in public restrooms. Either that or the MoMA!

Do you have any other hobbies?
I started making stop motion films when I was in elementary school.  Unfortunately it takes like 50 years to make a short animated film, so I just don’t have the time to get back into it.  But I used to have so much fun making them.

What was the first big art project you remember as a kid?
When I was in preschool, we used to have art and craft time where we would cut things out of paper and glue them together to create images.  One day, I told my teachers I wanted to plan the craft exercise for the day.  I designed templates for my classmates to cut out pieces to make mermaids.  I remember sitting there with my teachers drawing the tail correctly since the way they drew mermaid tails looked like shit, honestly.  Not sorry about it.

What are you working on right now, and what's next for you?
Well, I'm crawling out of my quarantine depression and trying to figure out exactly what I want to do next with my personal art.  I currently work as an artist on two separate graphic novel properties which will take up most of my time for the next year or so.  In the meantime I’ll keep drawing what I love- butts and balls.
