Right when I first saw Joseph Abbati’s work, I knew it would be perfect for the dandy collection: colorful, graphic, humorous, and overtly sexual. Turns out (to my pleasure), he has the personality to match. Abbati is an established artist and curator who is proud to showcase graphic depictions of erotic subject matter as a meaningful part of his repertoire. He seems more than comfortable experimenting in his work, so I’m looking forward to seeing where that leads him.
(dandy:) Where do you live?
(Abbati:) San Francisco, CA
Where do you make art?
My home studio
Turn Ons:
Arm pits
Turn Offs:
Glass over artwork. I hate when the reflection of light on glass hides the artwork below it.
Favorite subject:
Male figures.
Ideal place to display your work?
In front of your bathroom toilet. It’s a good way to spend your time looking at my work without being distracted.
Favorite non-art pastime?
Chaturbate, a website where guys wank off in real time.
Most memorable project?
“Larger Than Life,” a series of portraits I did of San Francisco drag queens that I photographed then turned into tapestries.
Art Crush
Russell Tovey, the host of the podcast “Art Talk” and actor.
Personal Crayon Color
Pearl Necklace White
What is unique about your process?
My paintings are sometimes seen as being prints or photographs. They are based on photographs but they are painted. My experience of graphic design informs my choices on how I want lay out my colors and compositions.
Why make art?
I enjoy creating. It can be art, sewing, cooking, or laying down a new floor. I like to use my hands and figure out how to make something in my imagination.
What's next?
I’m continuing my work in figurative paintings. Instead of relying on appropriated images, I will start taking photographs of my subjects to paint. Skin textures and colors are something I am exploring more of now.
